Abstract: Segregationist policies towards leprosy keep on echoing in Brazilian memory and society. Throughout the twentieth century, leprosy sanatoriums and "prevention centers" for children were built in different states of the country, for the confinement of the patients and their sons. In São Paulo, the recent pratimonialization processes of such places allow broadens the concept of heritage, including a so called "difficult memory", a re-dimensioned memory frequently linked to compensation policies towards atrocities from the past. Such compensation initiatives as well as the preservation of funds, scientific instruments and architectural structures linked to history of leprosy in Brazil bring about a wider dimension to the very idea of preservation and celebration of the past.
