The aim of this study was to characterize new cases of leprosy reported and confirmed in the city of Rondonópolis / MT. This is a quantitative research, cross-sectional, non-experimental, retrospective, through exploratory and descriptive assessment using data from Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) of the Ministry of Health from 2001 to 2010. During the study period, 1,919 new cases were diagnosed, the most common age group was 20 to 39 years old, male, brown, elementary school and residing in urban areas. It was further observed that the classification was the most frequent operational multibacillary borderline being predominant and most cases do not present any physical disability. The results show a high rate of cases of leprosy, being necessary to decentralize the control actions of this disease, empower health professionals to carry out early diagnosis and prevention of disability.
