Axonal multiplication was noticed in nonmyelinated axons in specimens from both tuberculoid and lepromatous leprosy. The Schwann cells in tuberculoid nerves were devoid of M. leprae in contrast to those in lepromatous nerves in which large number of bacilli were seen. These observations suggest that the Schwann cells containing nonmyelinated axons may be affected more frequently in either type of leprosy.</p>  a0254-9395
