Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease. Leprosy is caused by slowly multiplying bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae.
Objective: A study first aim was to identify the student knowledge about Leprosy disease. The second was to find out if there were differentials in levels of knowledge about leprosy across different college students. The third objective interrogated how the prevailing level of knowledge the effectiveness of leprosy control programmer.
Method: A questionnaire based, cross sectional study was conducted among 150 medical students (Faculty of Medicine and Higher Institute of Medical Sciences and Technologies) of different years starting from 2nd year and onwards during period from June 2022 to August 2022. The questionnaire was designed to achieve the aims of study, it was consisting of two parts, the first content the demographic information, the second part include the student the basic knowledge and awareness of disease, third part to attitudes of community towards leprosy. Data were analyzed by using frequency distribution and percentage.
Result: Overall, students showed an intermediate level of knowledge of leprosy. The questions with the highest frequency of correct responses included those which concerned other name of Leprosy is Hansen disease (46%), its confirmation by Skin biopsy (64.7%), and bacteria as the cause of leprosy (65.3%). In addition, (37.3%) of students responded that mode of leprosy spread by Droplets, from the nose and mouth, reflecting an intermediate level of knowledge. The results revealed that there is insufficient knowledge of and attitudes toward leprosy among students at the different college students in Tripoli. It is necessary to improve current health education measures by using updated educational strategies to reduce the stigma of leprosy and the segregation of leprosy patients and their families.
