Stigma Assessment and Reduction of Impact
Introduction
The aim of the SARI Project is to reduce leprosy related stigma in the community and to reduce its impact among persons affected by leprosy and their families. Specifically, the project will assess the effectiveness of three stigma reduction interventions: counselling, contact between the community and affected people and socio-economic development. Mixed methods including different scales, interviews and focus group discussions are used to assess the impact. An interactive learning and action approach is applied to continuously refine the interventions during the project implementation. People affected by leprosy or disability are involved in every aspect of the project and capacity building of individuals and organisations is a key co-objective of this project. The SARI project is currently executed in Cirebon District, Indonesia. This project is executed by Universitas Indonesia, VU University Amsterdam and Disability Studies in Nederland. The study is supported by grants from Netherlands Leprosy Relief, Sasakawa Memorial Health Foundation, the American Leprosy Missions and effect:hope (formerly The Leprosy Mission Canada).
