Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases.
THROUGH POWERFUL PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATION WE WORK TO CONTROL, ELIMINATE, AND ERADICATE NTDS AND IMPROVE THE LIVES OF HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.
The Uniting to Combat NTDs is a collective of invested, interested and dedicated to fulfilling the London Declaration 2020 goals. The goal of Uniting to Combat NTDs is to support the World Health Organization (WHO) Roadmap in its aim to reach 2020 control, elimination and eradication targets for 10 specific NTDs (Lymphatic Filiariasis, Trachoma, Soil-Transmitted Helminths, Onchocerciasis, Schistosomiasis, Leprosy, Dracunculiasis, Visceral Leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, and Human African Trypanosomiasis). Through collaboration, information sharing, and unified strategies, the partners of the Uniting to Combat NTDs complement and extend the reach of the WHO to support national programs in their efforts to build and implement NTD programs. As the partners come from varied fields, they can act as a coalition of voices that can speak to issues and promote strategies that supplement the work of the WHO and broaden the support that is made available to national programs.
An outline of strategies and targets to be achieved by 2020 were presented in the WHO’s Accelerating Work to Overcome the Global Impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases: A Roadmap for Implementation. That document, commonly referred to as the “WHO Roadmap,” has acted as a call to arms to the international community and initiated many global discussions on how best to support the WHO and the endemic countries to achieve these goals. When industry joined the collaborative discussions alongside donors, and major implementing agencies, they created the critical mass necessary through their pledges to provide some of the essential drugs used to combat many of these diseases. During the discussion that took place in London in January 2012, although participants felt that all NTDs should eventually be addressed, it was resolved that 10 of the 17 NTDs had the essential ingredients for immediate targeted assistance.
